Thank you for stopping by Island Oars where "custom"
is our middle name and every customer is given individual attention
in finding the perfect oar for their needs. My belief is that wood
is a beautiful natural entity upon itself and by using each woods
individual characterstics I combine them in such a way to get the
best results of strength, weight, and balance.
The majority of wood I use is logged here on the coast of British
Columbia and is hand selected by myself for it's grain and lack
of imperfections. I use the very dense and durable purpleheart for
my blade edges, but fortunatley this wood is selectively harvested
from central america without harsh forestry practices.
My goal is to produce the finest oars available and to keep the
business small, rather than mass produce inferior quality oars where
the customer has very limited choices in options or sizes. I have
built oars for river rafting, drift boats, sculling shells, yacht
tenders, sailboats up to 28', venetian gondolas, dragon boat steering
oars, yulohs for sculling and of course oars for the fine pulling
boats that are a sight to behold as they gracefully slide through
the water barely leaving a ripple as they go.
